Coloring Tutorials // Holographic Fill Effect

Want to add a holographic fill to your coloring masterpieces?? I’m ya girl. Watch and learn. ♥

Choose your weapons:

  • Alcohol markers — any brand will do. Use all the things.
  • Paper that is bleedproof or at least marker friendly.
  • Lineart. (Yours or mine ;*)
  • Scrap sheet of the same paper as your lineart.

    But why? Because I said so. Trust me — you’ll appreciate this step later. This is our swatch page and testing zone. It helps us judge how many layers we can apply before we overwork or bleed through our “canvas.” It’s also great for practicing effects.

Alright so gather the things and let’s get to it. Look at your image that will be getting the fill and try to imagine it filled in. Where is your light source? Where’s the highlighted areas? I recommend trying this on that scrap paper before committing this early on.


After figuring out where your highest points of your object are ;] you will be making some shapes to follow what you think it would look like if you light was shining off of it.

If this is complicated no one really pays too much attention to light source with this that’s just a skill developed over time. Use random shapes. Trust me no one can tell.


Now get your next color. You should have 5 total plus a metallic if you’re adding some silver/gold tones to it at the end. If you don’t care about the extras then don’t worry about that boy.


TIP: Also whatever colors you choose make sure if in a row it’s a clean gradient feel. That’s important unless you want stripes more so than an easy transition. The cleaner the gradient the more potent the effect.

and 5. There’s no perfect rhyme or reason to this just power through the ugly okay.

Now take your white gel pen and create shines on the high points of your subject. Mine’s a skull so the goal is the show the dimension around the sockets, nost and wherever else. The amount of detail is up to you. I also added sparkles. and little dots as filler. Then went in and added my “shadows” You’re the boss of this. She went from boring to evil and shit. Yasss we love it. <3
